Today is the day to soar

I have spend the last few weeks watching a nest of three tiny barn swallows perched high in the eaves of my covered front porch. The building of the nest. The sitting on the eggs. The feeding of the hatchlings. Weeks of watching and waiting. At times I worried that these three little bodies would fall from the overcrowded nest. I stared in wonder as the tiny heads tilted back with mouths agape waiting for food from their parents and screeching for more.

This morning I grabbed my coffee and went to watch. But, there was nothing to see. No little heads bobbing out of the nest. I felt anxiety creep in.  Then, I saw them. Soaring in large loops and zooming through the pillars of the porch with still a touch of fuzz on their heads. In the words of Bob Marley’s song, Three Little Birds: don’t worry about a thing, ’cause every little thing is gonna be all right.

Home Sweet Home

Today’s Mantra: respond, don’t react.

What if we just acted like everything was easy?

This famous quote by  Mary Ann Radmacher  is one that I have often pondered.  The question is scrawled on a scrap of blue paper, stabbed with a pushpin into the cork board above my desk.  What if, I ask myself, what if?

What if I could float through each day feeling like there was nothing to react to, but only to respond to? How would that feel? Would the tension ease from my shoulders? Would my jaw unclench when faced with a seemingly insurmountable problem?

I think that reality is what you make it, but the true question for me remains, how do I change the way I think?  How do I repattern my brain’s response? Is it even possible?

Let’s find out.  Today, I will try to act if everything is easy.  Stay tuned.

Todays’ Mantra: Be passionate about life

Passionflower at Moreland Farms

Living requires breathing and although breathing is important, it is also necessary to occasionally be left breathless in order to bring life into focus.  The beauty of nature – like a passion flower in bloom – can definitely leave me breathless at times. It pulls me into the present moment, saturates the colors of my world and takes my breathe away….only to leave me feeling more alive.

Passion (from the Ancient Greek verb πάσχω (paskho) meaning to suffer) is a term applied to a very strong feeling about a person or thing. Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for something.

Today’s Mantra: Today, I will try to remember to be passionate about life and breathless in the moment.

Things I believe in…

–         Even the tiniest bit of kindness is worthwhile.

–         We are all one.

–         On most days I think I am a good person and on the days I don’t, I’m wrong.

–         Animals have an incredible power to heal.

–         Life is all about perspective.

–         Choosing not to decide, is a choice.

–         Butterflies are simultaneously, the most delicate and strong creatures on the planet.

–         It is important to connect.

–         We are better off for all that we let in.

–         Creativity is a necessary part of life to experience joy.

–         Flowers are indeed, the earth laughing.

–         Sand and water are as important to me as the air I breathe.

–         Daydreams will only get me so far, I need to learn to act and take risk.

What do you believe in… today?

A Whole Heap of Creativity

I had the delightful pleasure of slipping away for a few hours yesterday to wander through the creative minds of some of the members of Baltimore’s very own Craft Mafia. Shame on me for forgetting my camera, but check out their Holiday Heap Event website to see all the crafty artisans.

There were stuffed hand-made monsters, jewelry from broken antique dishes, hand-spun yarn, silk screened clothing, and much more.  Here are some of my favorites:

Red Prairie PressRed Prairie Press is a one woman (rachel bone) sweatshop, supported in part by a sometimes-bearded man (phil davis) and a cat the size of a small dog (mr. sammy).

Rachel had absolutely beautiful clothing and scarves.  I snatched up an adorable long sleeve t-shirt and a fuchsia scarf.

Another favorite was Little Flower Designs.
Little Flower Designs is an independent ceramic studio run by designer & maker Linda Johnson. Linda uniquely blends simple forms with bold surface design to create her
handmade dinnerware and home accessories.

Each of Linda’s pieces were so sweet and seemed to have their own personality. I had trouble choosing just one sweet cup, so I did the only logical thing…I got two.

My tiny blue bird cup has such amazing detail. I placed him out in the sun today so he could commune with other feathery friends.  And my darling little flower cup was so cheery this morning holding my orange juice. How could I not start my day right?

Gazing at all the beautiful wares yesterday got my creative juices flowing and I wasn’t sure were they were going to flow to until Owlivia appeared….

Whoooo knew that ribbon, felt, fabric, buttons and thread could produce such a cute vibrant little bird? Well, apparently I did.

Whooo can resist those baby blues?

Doesn’t she just make your heart sing?

Go ahead, have a hoot today and play a little…You just might find yourself having fun.

If you can’t find the time to get out to a local craft show or fair. Support a local crafter at home…you.      GO PLAY NOW!!!
